The warm sunlight streamed through the window, painting stripes across Elias’s face. He’d abandoned his planned route through the airport's crowded food court, and found a bench near a nearly empty gate. He'd bought a large, overly-sweet iced coffee that he took slow, deliberate sips of. He observed the activity around him. His phone buzzed, alerting him to the fact his flight was late. He chuckled to himself; he was going to miss his daughter's school play, a minor disaster that somehow failed to register as anything more than a passing blip.
